Every car and truck should be driven over a cliff. Horses and buggies. And the folks standing behind Obama should be shoveling the horse shit in the streets. Not true. The Clean Diesel Jetta TDI set the world record of 58.75MPG driving across the contentious United States in 2008. For the record my 2006 only gets 46 to 51MPG. Argument holds no water.
furthermore, off road equipment is generally exempted from the emissions acts because emissions only apply to on-road vehicles. combines and tractors won’t sooner get a DPF than will a gasoline car that can’t even make use of the technology. Again, your argument is based out of fear and misinformation. We’re on youtube. Why not search for videos of european diesel cars on the dragstrip and get back to me?
First off I don’t know where your coming from with this us (country) vs them (city) mentality, but it needs to stop. I’m from Mississippi, and believe me I understand the needs of farmers and long range drivers. Clean diesel pickups seem to be getting the same economy once chipped as the unclean ones get, and the DPF system can be disabled once you own it if you really need your soot. Both my diesels smoke, I use biodiesel to control that. Your argument holds no water.
and what about the people like a farmer u know the ones who need a great big powerful truck for hauling hay live stock grain produce all that stuff that big city people take for granted? this new emissions plan does not make any alotment for them u cant get the power you need + gas mileage + clean exhaust all in one go i have seen diesel 3/4 ton trucks get 35+ mpg but they blow out lots of black smoke from the tail pipe that i dont mind but u city folk seem 2 find offensive.
Ok.. well there are only oh so many 7 passenger cars. Most notable are minivans, the same 2.8L 30MPG diesel that powered the US 2005 Liberty CRD is *still* sold in Europe in the Grand Caravan/Town & Country. Thanks to its aerodynamic design, it can get 30MPG. You want to say that a 5000LB rated diesel that had a 1 sec faster 0-60 as the 3.7L V6 that gets 18mpg? I’ve personally seen 115 radar clocked in my Jetta on a track, so, drive a 2000+ turbo diesel vw, benz, jeep, or truck & report back.
I got the main purpose of his change – now the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is going to make desisions how you should live your life. They know better what cars you should drive. What is going to be next?
yea but the problem is what about familys of 5? or 6? or 7? or what about a family of 5 who then is having a birthday party for their kid at Chucky cheese and needs to give their childs friend a ride home? thats part of the reason people drive suvs. comfort and versatility, no compromising. americans like the idea that they COULD drive 120 plus if they wanted to, americans like the idea that they COULD take thier kids and their friends out for ice cream in hte summer if they wanted to.
the auto makers cant do this because the federal emissions standards on new cars wont allow them to. in order to make a diesel get great mileage u eliminate the nasty emisssions crap. remove the cats, fix all the filter crap & then the vehicle can be used ot its max potential.
All of you whom believe that this is the end of large cars, I have a new Jetta – it’s no longer a compact car – it seats 4 250LB adults in extreme comfort and gets 47MPG running 75 with the AC on. It’s available in the US. It’s a diesel car. We’ve been duped into believing the viable technologies were flawed, see the GM Delta 88 Diesel from 1978-1988.
BTW how does a little guy in Utah that takes H3s you know Hummers get over 100mpg???? How does a little shop in Utah do this>?? Why cant the auto makers do this?? They are under contract by you the Government not to do so. I have a 4 door 2007 GMC Pick-up from the factory got 16mpg. I changed that on my own with little tinkering in my back yard now that same truck with over 500HP gets 35mpg… Why can we do these things very simply but few auto makers can? Something stinks that’s why
By the way, with all the talk about OIL why dont you tell the truth about American OIL reserves that will last over 300 years? WHY? What about Prudhoe Bay in Alaska where you tell our Government never to remove the oil that is caped off there. One of the biggest oil surplus in America. Maybe it was Kissingers deal with the Arabs? The only way to go green and stop dependence on oil is to force people to move to other sources. I say tax fuel even if its expensive!!! Thats the only way people to demand fuel efficient vehicles and auto companies will have to make them. otherwise the lose business. Govt also makes money on the tax collected which they can use for other purposes like education, research, alternative energy sources, infrastructure etc.
